‘We are ready to go to prison’ – FUTA

The Daily Mirror, 05/06/2011, By Lakna Paranamana

We are even ready to be imprisoned in our struggle to win the demands of a substantial pay hike, Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) today said.

FUTA Spokesman Dr. Mahim Mendis told Daily Mirror Online that the academics are ready to defy the interim order which was issued by the Appeal Courts last week, which prevented the Vice Chancellors of the Ruhuna, J’Pura and Wayamba universities from accepting the resignation letters of the Department Heads in those universities.

“We have sought legal advice on the possibility of taking legal measures to overrule the interim order. But if that fails we are ready to even be imprisoned by defying the interim order,” Dr. Mendis said.

Meanwhile FUTA vowed to further strengthen their trade union action following the second round of discussions between FUTA members and President as a result of the no-show of relevant officials including the President during the meeting at Temple Trees last evening. (Lakna Paranamanna)
