IUSF Objects To Proposed Amendments To Universities Act

The Sunday Leader

The Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) has warned of carrying out a students’ movement against the amendments proposed by the government to the Universities Act.

The IUSF has said the students would rally against the proposed amendments if they are not subjected to an open discussion by the government.

The Federation has said the proposed amendments to the Act would politicize the University Grants Commission (UGC).

IUSF Convener Sanjeewa Bandara has said among the changes that are to come into effect through the amendments are the expansion of the UGC membership to 15 and expanding the UGC’s scope to tertiary state, private and higher education sectors.

Bandara has questioned as to why the amendments were to be introduced without having an open discussion on the matter.

According to him, the new amendments would make way for political interferences into the higher education sector.
